The tell

Your verification code is 482913. Never share this code.

A real bank never asks you to read back a code it just sent, and never asks you to move your money to keep it safe. There is no safe account.

Example from our recreation.

How it works

  1. A caller says they are from your bank's fraud department and have seen suspicious activity.
  2. A code arrives by text, and the caller asks you to read it back. That code unlocks your account for them.
  3. Then they ask you to move your money to a "safe account." It is theirs.

What to do

  1. Hang up.
  2. Call the number on the back of your card. Never a number the caller gives you.
